People Like Me

Do you feel in the minority? Perhaps you’re worried that there won’t be anyone at university like you. Maybe you’re a mature student, an Asian student, a student with a disability, a student who’s religious, a parent, a student on an access course, the only person in your family going to uni…

You’re not alone. Universities are opening their doors to a growing number of students from diverse backgrounds. Keep your eyes peeled for opportunities: look out for local students’ groups; mature students’ meetings; women’s events and other activities that will enable you to make new friends. There may be a mentoring scheme that you can join; either receiving a mentor or being one yourself! Many students’ unions also organise sports teams, drama, faith groups, volunteering opportunities, work experience… the list is endless.
Impact is a careers scheme for students from under-represented groups. It’s based in the careers service at the universities of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, Leeds, Leeds Met, Huddersfield and Bradford. The programme is funded by Aimhigher which you may have heard of at school or college. Your Impact Officer can assist you with: thinking about your career plans; looking at your CV and application forms; helping you find work experience and a mentor; and inviting you to workshops and careers events. Impact is a great way to develop your skills, think about your future and learn to be more confident in your abilities.
