The respondent to this survey is Sam who is from a White British background.

What qualifications did you hold prior to starting university? 9 GCSEs; 4 A-levels
What was the name of your course?Archaeology - BA/Arch
While at university have you worked part-time?Yes
While at university have you performed any voluntary work?Yes
While at university have you undertake any work experience?Yes
Please give details of your experience?Worked part-time as a barman at City Hall. Did voluntary work with Student Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers and Sheffield Association of Volunteer Teachers of English. Did excavations (work experience) with the Department in the Peak District and in Greece. (Worked in excavations in Canterbury and for the Inland Revenue during the summers.)
How useful did you find this work experience when it came to find a job after graduating?I believe the volunteer work with refugees and asylum seekers contributed to my successful application for PhD funding, though it detracted from my application to an MA programme, because the course director wrongly questioned my commitment to my work and the quantity and quality of work done with such distractions.
What is your status?Studying
Do you feel you have a career plan?Yes
If so, how does your current situation fit into this plan?I don't have a plan inasmuch as I don't know whether I will go into academia, into I/NGO work (for example, for UNESCO) or into excavation work (or even something unrelated if nothing else is available), but it will support my entry into any of them. There are very few employment opportunities in archaeology and many of those there are are very poor, so on top of the general qualification inflation (needing better and better qualifications in an increasingly qualified market), a PhD will help to demonstrate my abilities, as well as giving me a niche.
