Did you experience any difficulties when it came to finding work after graduation? If yes, please describe some of the problems you faced? Firstly I went on to further study to give myself time to think and to get work experience as I planned on remaining in the heritage sector. I then applied for a lot of jobs but most of them required 2 years experience. I should really have done my Masters in Museum Studies to become more work place orientated rather than Archaeology that was more academic and focused towards further study.
What do you wish you had known before you started applying for jobs? I wish I'd had more of a plan and stuck to it. If you don't want to do a graduate fast-track role then it is good to either focus on postgraduate study to become more academic or work experience to show employers what you are capable of.
What advice would you give to someone applying for jobs now?Get more work experience! Don't wait for them to advertise, just keep ringing round. Don't give up hope because its tough for everyone with more and more people graduating with good grades.
Would you have done anything differently while at university to prepare for your career? Please give details.Possibly searched earlier. Definitely should have made more use of careers centre workshops on C.V.s etc.
How do you feel your degree has prepared you for today's labour market?Frankly it makes me very cynical about what I'm doing as I tend to over analyse but I wouldn't change it for the world!
What impact did your course have on your career aspirations? Directed into career path
Did you make use of the careers service at university?Yes
If yes, please describe how you used the careers service.I went for a meeting but as I knew which sector I wanted to join, they could not help me much further. The information booklets were a little vague and could have been better written by someone who knew the Heritage Sector.
