What responsibilities do you hold?Run accounts department including two purchase ledger clerks, one sales ledger clerk, two credit controllers, receptionist & IT staff. Responsible for preparing monthly management accounts running IIF invoice discounting facility, foreign currency purchases, VAT, authorising payments & accounting function.
What do you enjoy the most about this job?Much less stressful than my previous role at Grant Thornton. Nice environment to work in. I have yet to finish my first year in industry so am learning all the time.
What do you enjoy the least?Preparing the management accounts & performing inter-group recharges - quite mundane. Office politics can also be a burden.
What was involved in the recruitment process for this job?I was previously in charge of the group audit and had discussions with the finance director during an audit visit.
Do you feel you have a career plan?Yes
If so, how does your current situation fit into this plan?I aim to become a finance director here within the next 2-3 years. I am currently trying to improve my knowledge of the group & the industry as well as taking on new responsibilities to help meet my goal.
When did you start thinking about what you wanted to do after graduation? Thinking back did you leave enough time for this? I knew I wanted to train to be a chartered accountant & applied for my first job as soon as term started in my final year. I had accepted the job by the December of my final year.

Did you experience any difficulties when it came to finding work after graduation? If yes, please describe some of the problems you faced? No
What do you wish you had known before you started applying for jobs? If I had known about other potential careers as rewarding as say becoming an actuary, I may have chosen a different career. A list of most popular careers (with average salaries!!)following each degree course may have been useful - e.g. I could have looked down the maths degree section & found actuary with the average earnings of a qualified actuary.
What advice would you give to someone applying for jobs now?Apply early. Many graduate jobs are taken within the first few months of your final year.
Would you have done anything differently while at university to prepare for your career? Please give details.No
How do you feel your degree has prepared you for today's labour market?It has allowed me to mature before moving into my first job, given me skills I now take for granted, but which are lacking in several colleagues who have not been to University (especially in IT skills) & given me extra self confidence.
