The learning skills council have made forecasts up until the year 2010. Their key findings for Barnsley are as follows:
  • Total employment is forecast to grow by 2,590. Key growth sectors will be Health, Hotels and Catering, Rubber and Plastic Manufacture, Business Services and Education. Areas of employment decline are Energy and Utilities, Metal Related Manufacture and Public Administration
  • The majority of the employment growth will be in part-time employment, but there will also be a significant increase in full-time employees and the self-employed
  • Occupations that will increase in demand are Managers and Corporate Administrators, Clerical and Administrative Staff, elementary Clerical Staff, Transport Drivers, Caring and Sales Staff. Areas of occupational decline will be Skilled Manual Trades and Process Operators.
  • There will be an increased demand for individuals qualified to NVQ Level 2 and Level 4.
  • Replacement demand for retirees will be a key issue for Barnsley. The forecast net replacement demand is 24,650 between 2002 –2010. Key hot spots will be Public Sector Technicians, Nursing Staff, Doctors, Professional Engineers and Scientists, Caring Staff, Administrative and Clerical Staff and Sales Staff.

South Yorkshire has spawned from a collection of industrial towns and cities into an international business hub with forecast growth in a number of key business sectors like health, transport, wholesaling, business services, education and manufacturing.

The learning and skills council expect that approximately 16, 800 workers will need to be replaced annually until 2010 and that of the 13.5 million jobs expected to be filled by 2012, 50% are most likely to require graduates.
